Babs' Story: Babs was found abandoned and unclaimed within a West Country pound. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving her life. Babs is now neutered, chipped, and undergoing vaccinations. Babs came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting her new family.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Babs' progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

Original referral information: 4.1.24 Good Morning Lynne,

I hope you are well. I have a stray female Shar Pei, she has finished her days and I am struggling to find a rescue space for her and wondered if you may have any spaces?

The kennel staff have said she seems friendly and walks nicely on the lead, they haven’t had any issues.
The kennels do not mix the strays as we do not know their history and cannot say for certain how she is like with other dogs however, she is in kennels surrounded by dogs and hasn’t had a negative reaction to them.

Many Thanks, Matt

We had lovely Babs to stay over the weekend and she couldn’t have been a better house guest.

When we picked her up she was shedding a lot of top coat so when we got home she happily let us brush it all off until we we had a carrier bag full roflmao.gif then off she went to sniff and explore the rest of the house.

Babs has some of those typical Shar pei traits, aloofness when she wants to do what she wants to do, you call her one way and she goes the other but this is all part of her wonderful character.

She walks really well on the lead and didn’t seem particularly interested in other dogs, she did go for a bit of a run round the park with one of my daughters so can pick up a bit of speed and loves to sniff everything.

She does like to come up on the sofa next to people and have a cuddle, not full on but such lovely company.

She is a classic pei, stunning, regal and a real delight, she won’t be there long.

I was lucky enough to be able to take Babs out today, she’s a gentle girl that requires a calm and soft approach but after a few sniffs and treats I was easily able to put leads on and take her out for a quick photoshoot

She’s lovely to walk, extremely calm and was having lots of inquisitive sniffs along the walk, she didn’t mind walkers or joggers going by and seemed unphased by squirrels and dogs,

She certainly warmed up allowing head and body rubs and even nuzzling in, she will be the perfect companion for someone looking for a good natured sweet dog.

Met sweet Babs today, it was quite cold so we had a brisk walk around the neighbourhood. We passed barking dogs, sheep, joggers, people - she was not bothered.
Only when we came to houses she seemed to hesitate at the driveways as to say 'Are we going in this one' :smiley-sad055.gif:
Lovely little girl.

The beautiful Babs has come to stay love4.gif We have had Babs’ lovely company for the past 4 days and with each day, more of her true character comes to light :biggrin.gif: Babs travels impeccably in the car. With the encouragement of a treat she climbs in herself and sits or lays silently for the whole journey thumbs.gif

Babs was very inquisitive on arrival and toured the whole house making sure that she was happy to call this place home for now thumbs.gif

On Saturday, we took a trip to the vets as Babs was feeling a little under the weather. Again, she travelled perfectly. She was also a little star at the vets. She let me lift her onto the table and allowed the vets to do a full check of her with no issues. Including a temperature check…

Babs likes to sleep in her bed for large parts of the day. We move it around, dependent on the room people are in. She likes to be in the presence of people, not necessarily having to be near you, but just knowing that someone is there.

Babs is pretty affectionate when she wants to be. She will come over for cuddles and but scratches when she’s not sleeping!

We gave Babs a wash, which she wasn’t too keen on at first. Once she was in the shower, she was absolutely fine.

Babs walks well on the lead. She doesn’t pull, but likes to walk ahead. She seems to want to say hello to most people and dogs.

Babs is a super easy going girl, she is so undemanding and just makes a perfect companion. I can’t speak highly enough of her love4.gif Pictures are to follow (the majority of which are her sleeping!) Kiss of love.gif

Babs continues to be such a good girl and has settled in extremely well love4.gif It is clear that she is feeling much more like herself and this was confirmed by her recent follow up check up at the vets, which she was very well behaved at, even looking for more treats from the vet for being such a good girl thumbs.gif
Babs’ typical day consists of walk, eat, sleep, sleep, sleep, walk, eat, sleep, sleep, sleep :biggrin.gif: ( just look at the photos for proof!)
She is perfectly housetrained, we let her out every couple of hours or whenever she’s finally awake! Babs travels very well in the car, you wouldn’t even know she’s there!
Babs loves a sniffy walk. She has picked up the pace and walks pretty quickly and then comes to an abrupt stop when’s she found a smell she likes! Occasionally, she gets excited and turns around and tries to play (quite puppy like). Simply standing still stops her and she will carry on walking. We’ve been trying to figure out why or when she does this. The exact answer is yet to be discovered but it’s often when we’re crossing the road. I think maybe busy roads with load traffic can be a bit overwhelming for Babs! In the meantime, we will try and work on this! Babs has shown interest to other dogs and people, and on a very rare occasion will pull towards wildlife (this has only happened once). Today, I walked Babs whilst my brother walked our grandads border collie, Ben. The meeting was in a controlled manner and Babs did bark at Ben on first meeting, but I think this was because he licked her face. After this, they walked really nicely together, even sniffing the same smells.
In the house, evidently Babs loves to sleep. She picks and chooses her spots, whether her beds mainly or the sofa on occasions. She likes to be in your presence and will come over to you looking for affection. This has become more often, the more comfortable she gets with you. She is such a cutie love4.gif Shes been fine with new people coming to the house too.
Babs is very undemanding and provides such perfect company love4.gif

Babs has settled in really well over the past month. We are continuing to learn more about her as her personality blossoms :
Babs is perfectly house trained- we let her out every now and then and she will go unless it’s raining!
She sleeps a lot during the day either on her own or typically with whoever it home 💤
She loves her food! When we get home from walks, she rushes into the kitchen immediately waiting for her food. If you have food, she will follow you around wanting some of course thumbs.gif
Babs had her ears flushed about a week ago and I think as a result she can now hear a lot better.
She has since been more vocal in the home. Typically barking at planes, or if she sense something outside. This is manageable however.
She sleeps well throughout the night for the most part. Occasionally she has woken up wanting to be let out to go to the toilet, but this hasn’t been often.
She will come over to you looking for affection or if you call her over. She is also happy with being in your company but not always right next to you. love4.gif
When new people have come round, she has barked at a few of them at the door when they enter, but she settles once they are in the house.
She has been really good with new people inside the house, isn’t typically too affectionate with them but is totally fine!
When out on walks Babs can be a little unpredictable:
She can walk really nicely on the lead, she loves to sniff and I think by allowing her to do so relaxes her.
She can also pull a lot too. Sometimes on walks she can go between walking nicely and pulling.
She has been more alert to wildlife, especially birds and will pull towards them.
She is fine with people and bikes passing by, this doesn’t bother her. She will usually pull towards other dogs. Sometimes this can be in a friendly manner but sometimes it’s reactive. It tends to be If another dog barks at her, she will bark back and she will start to pull. This may then continue on when we see other dogs ( but not always!) With a stern voice saying ‘enough’ you can stop her from barking and pulling, when the other dog walks on. She is capable of being friendly towards other dogs and we have had off lead dogs running up to her and she has been absolutely fine however.
We try to start her walks off calmly, by putting her in a ‘sit’ in the house so that she doesn’t pull and be super alert of all her surrounding straight away!
More recently we have noticed that she can get frightened by traffic, especially when it’s busy. She will try and drag you away from it if she knows an alternative route or just stop completely.
She does however love walks in the woods or over some fields where there are lots of exciting new smells. She thrives in these environments and has such a good time running around on the long line. We practice recall with her. It’s not perfect but it’s very good. woo.gif]
Babs has so much to offer and will provide a lot of happiness and laughter to whoever the fortunate people are to infinitely love her in the (near🤞🏻) future! She so deserves a loving home. I think she’s been through a rough start to life, but despite this, she finds it within herself to trust and love you. I can promise you that any ‘flaws’ she has are completely worth the lifelong love she will give to you😊

Libby what amazingly good and detailed posts on Babs - you tell people such a lot about her and you are so obviously fond of her - they are lovely to read. You have captured her quirky charm on the photos too - what an endearing little dog she is and how lucky she is to have such a comfortable and happy secure foster place with you and your family. Thank you. positivo1.gif
