Penny's Story: Penny was found abandoned and unclaimed within a Sussex council pound. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving her life. Penny is now neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Penny came to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting her new family.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Original referral information:
Hi Lynne,

This is Penny I mentioned on our last visit. She has been stuck in Kennels since 17 October with no Rescue offers.
She has now been given the date of 6th December, before being PTS.

Penny,
Gsd Mix? Female Dob: 3/7/17
No known health problems. Found as a stray, can be nervous to begin with, but quickly makes a bond with people she trusts, gets on well with all the Kennel staff.

She is not great with other dogs, but does accept them next to her in the exercise paddocks.

Knows basic commands, Sit, Paw and loves to please you for treats. Rx Dog Warden

Penny has arrived. She has a smiley face and is now beginning close friendships within the Staff team and our Rescue. Takes treats gently through her kennel door and settling well. Feel she has been under socialised as her instincts with other dogs are novice. Parallel walking will help her learn to trust and feel safe.

I had the pleasure of meeting and walking Penny today. What a stunning girl. Using liver cake and sausage by way of introduction, her initial nervousness was slowly overcome and she thoroughly sniffed my hands and clothing. When she relaxed a little I stroked her and then clipped on the leads. Penny was delighted to be going for a walk. She is easy to walk, really interested in her surroundings, and seemingly non-reactive to other dogs ( but interested in them). She does pull a little, but nothing excessive.
I really enjoyed walking this girl xxx

Short video of Penny walking. She does tend to zig zag but is not unmanageable at all. I find her nervous but friendly. We sit down at the end of the walk. It takes her 5 or 10 mins to wind down, then she sits and accepts the strokes.

I met Penny for the first time on Wednesday. She was a little nervous when I entered her kennel but after a few treats she let me put her leads on. After a few minutes stroking her and getting to know each other we set off for a walk. She was excited to be out and didn't know which way to go. I was short on time so we just went up the kennel road to the main road. She didn't react to the cars or lorries passing and only showed interest in the other dogs we passed. A lovely dog who I will gladly walk again.

First walk with Penny today and she is lovely love4.gif I gave her a couple of treats initially and the she happily let me into the kennel and attach the leads. thumbs.gif She was very excited to get out for a walk and being part Akita she walks out front at a pace and loves sniffing all around. No issues with the traffic or with other dogs or people passing by, she’s just happy to be out and about and I am happy to take her woo.gif]

Penny is such a sweet girl. Really good on a walk and Ioves to have a good sniff around. She is very happy to take a treat on walks and is happy to stop for a cuddle.

I walked Penny earlier this week on a taster walk. What a delightful and friendly dog she is. She will definitely be on my walking list in future. While she does pull towards other dogs it seems to be good natured and friendly.
We decided to take her on the longer Keeper’s Cottage walk and she was very good. Compared with many of the dogs who are excited to get out, Penny was a relaxing walk.

Penny loved having a runaround in the paddock too.

I had the pleasure to meet and walk Penny today. She loves to sniff and has her nose on the ground most of the walk. We headed to the stream and Penny had a quick dip with her feet in the water. We saw dogs from a distance and she showed interest, however with a no and a tug, we continued our walk immediately. Lovely girl. Definitely is now on my regular list. Kiss of love.gif

I was introduced to and walked penny for the first time today. I gave her some liver cake and she was happy for the leads to be attached to her harness and collar. Took an interest in other dogs but not reactive and walked past the cattery quite easily. Does pull slightly but is completely manageable and she loved the paddock- you can see in the video she’s entertaining herself with a puddle and leaves!
