Hugo's Story: Hugo and his litter brother Oreo were handed into a vet to be put to sleep as their owners could not find a rescue place for them. The Vet team could not put them to sleep so tried everywhere. We agreed to save them and the vets agreed to neuter them and deliver them! Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving their lives. Hugo is now neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Hugo came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting their new family(s).

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum adoption donation is £300 (£500 for a pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Hugo's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

Original referral information: Urgent call as a Vet nurse was calling around frantic to find somewhere to help Hugo and Oreo.

Hugo (and Oreo) came into RescueRemedies on the 20th September 25.

I drove to Reading this morning to meet Hugo and Oreo love4.gif love4.gif . They were both very friendly and loved the attention they were getting from everyone at the vets.

I wish I could have fostered both, but unfortunately I couldn’t so Hugo said goodbye to his brother and travelled back to Godalming with me (about an hours drive) he travelled well in the crate with a bed in it and slept most of the way.

When we got back to mine he was happy to explore the house and the garden and is now having a nap on the sofa with me.

I’ll give a more detailed update in a couple days once he has settled.

Hugo has been with me since Saturday morning and what a sweet boy he is. He has settled quite quickly given all he has been through.

Hugo is a very affectionate boy and follows me around like a shadow. He seems to know his name. He enjoys to cuddle on the bed or sofa and will get as close as possible to you to ensure you don’t move.

Eating - Hugo enjoys his food eats it with gusto. He is enjoying his treats too and will give you the stare when he wants more 😂 he knows “sit” but no other commands. He is fine around human food and will sit or lay on the floor watching you eat.

Walks - we have only been on a couple walks since yesterday and he is a sniffer, he likes to get to know his surroundings. He can pull a bit but this is out of excitement and is small enough to manage quite easily. Once the excitement is over he walks just fine and takes directions well.

Playtime - He hasn’t really shown much interest in any toys. He did play with a ball for about 2 minute before loosing interest.

Toilet time - He has been clean in the house but I have been letting him out every couple hours, but not sure if he is house trained. He did do his business at around 10pm last night but he woke up at 2am to go outside.

Bedtime - As normal I allow dogs to sleep on the bed with and I can see that’s where Hugo wants to sleep being the affectionate boy he is. Other than the 2am toilet break he slept well and didn’t want to get out of bed this morning.

He is now fast asleep on the sofa with me.

Thank you again to the Vets that saved his and his bother (Oreo) life.

This boy is absolutely lovely and so affectionate.

He is enjoying his lay-in on the cooler mornings and a sun seeker during the day.

I had a visitor on Sunday and he was a real star, a little jumping in the beginning from excitement, but settled very quickly and was calm and followed direction.

On our walk last night he met one of the neighbours and was a real gentleman and didn’t make a fuss just stood next to me waiting for us to continue our walk.

Hugo has been with me for a week and he is settling well and coming out of his shell. He can be cheeky at times but is an absolute joy to have.

This morning we took a drive into town to get some bits and bobs from Pets at home. He was a little nervous (not sure if he has been in a store before) but he did very well, he had a good sniff around the store and a few strokes from the staff (he loves people). I got him a couple soft toys, an antler and some more of his favourite treats.

We then had a little stroll around the area by the river and he was a very good, sniffing everything and listened to direction well. There were few dogs around and he did pull a little towards them but this was out of excitement, no aggression at all. We even came across a cat laying on a house boat and he was fine.

Hugo is not an early walk dog, he liked to get his business done and head home to get some breakfast then it’s back in the bed 😂. He is normally good to go from 10am onwards and then he is full of energy. He does pull in the beginning but settles after ago 10/15 minutes.

He is still clean in the house (no accidents) enjoys his meal times and is always up for a cuddle on the sofa or bed.

He has started to show interest in toys, the tennis balls don’t last long but hasn’t destroyed any of the soft toys yet (some are close though 😂). He is now chewing on his antler and really loving it.

If I could I would adopt him in a heart beat as he is really a lovely boy.

Hugo enjoys rolling in the grass on his walks or in the garden and enjoys a good belly rub

Hugo had a very busy day yesterday, he joined me for an appointment in Guildford (in an office) he travelled well in the car, with no crate this time and he just soaked the world in as we drove. He was a true gentleman at my appointment, he got lots of cuddles from everyone there. He was absolutely knackered when we got back home.

Today was shower day as he hadn’t had once since being with me and it was a bit of cat and mouse to get him to say in the shower but once we got going he let me get on with it (he wasn’t too happy about it) but he is now nice and clean.

I have been getting the side eye though while he drys off.

Hugo has been with me for two weeks now and what an absolute pleasure it’s been having him with me. He truly is the loveliest dog and has an awesome personality.

Apologies if I repeat anything below.

Walks - Hugo allows you to put his harness on with no issues. Walks can be up and down, some days he pulls for a few minutes before calming down and others take a lot longer, but with him only being 17kg he is manageable and once he does settle down he is fine and enjoys taking in all the sights and smells.

Eating - He is a foodie and will wait patiently while making his food and will go sit at his spot waiting for you to serve him. He enjoys his treats and will sit in the kitchen staring at the treat tin if he feels like he isn’t getting enough 😂. There is no resource guarding. When I have dinner he will either lay in his bed at the base of the sofa or on the opposite side of the sofa, so no issue there.

Playtime - He is enjoying his soft toys and has only destroyed one so far, he also enjoys his antler. He has quite grasped the concept of normal dog play i.e rope pulling, fetch but with time I believe he will. He can get over simulated at times and can be a little mouthy but I’m putting it down to him still being young but he can be redirected quite quickly.

Travelling - He is very good in the car and seems to enjoy it. He jumps in and lets me hook him in and then he’ll sit in the back and watch out the windscreen taking everything in. He will wait nicely for you to unhook him and put the lead on before he jumps out of the car.

Toilet - There have been no accidents in the house. Hugo seems to be house trained and goes to the door when he wants to go outside.

Bedtime/ Sleeping - Hugo is a made for the sheets not the streets 😂. He sleeps on the bed with me (or should I say under the duvet) and will sleep from 10.30pm - 7.30am and even then I have to bribe him to get up. He loves the sofa and will ensure he lays on you so you can’t move.

Bath/shower time - Not a fan of it and he requires some bribery, but once you start he will let you do what you need to.

People and animals - Hugo loves people, he can be a little jumpy in the beginning but settles very quickly and he ensures he gets loads of cuddles from them. We have come across a few dogs on our travels this week, and from what I can see he is fine with dogs his size or smaller (will sniff each other and move on) but he seems nervous around bigger dogs and will bark at them.

Outside of what I have mentioned, he truly is the best boy ❤️❤️
