Gemm's Story: Gemm was taken in by a person who had 2 other sighthounds as she was being neglected. Sadly after 3 years her owner then lost his accommodation and was unable to find accommodation and keep his dogs. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving her life. Gemm is now neutered, chipped, and undergo vaccinations. Gemm came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting her new family.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Gemm's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

Original referral information: Urgent call: Man had 4 sighthounds and had lost his accommodation and literally had nowhere for his dogs and they were living out of a van. Needs must as he couldn't go to work leaving them and was spending all his time walking them.

Gemm came into RescueRemedies on the 13th June 25

Gemm has come to stay with us for a few days and she is a real sweetheart. She was a little reluctant to get in the car at first, but after lifting her in, she was fine on the back seat and enjoyed putting her head out of the window. She gets in ok now, and is happy to sit in the back with someone, especially when she knows she is going for a walk.

The weather has been incredibly hot, so we have not taken her out in the heat of the day, but she has been for some nice longer walks early morning and in the cool of the evening. She walks well on the lead, plodding along next to you taking in all the sights and sounds. As an ex racing greyhound she wears a muzzle but hasn't been bothered by this and is happy to put it on.

At home, she loves to stretch herself out on the sofa taking up all the room and will happily snooze for a while, often in some very peculiar positions! 0002.gif] She is equally happy, curling up next to someone else nodding off. She is house trained, and although we haven't left her, I am sure she would be ok for a couple of hours as she is so relaxed. If she hears noises outside the window she will turn her head, but doesn't get up for the door bell or other noises.

Gemm has a wonderfully placid temperament, she is gentle and calm around everyone she meets. As the week has gone on, she is starting to come out of herself a bit more and personality is starting to show which is lovely to see, she has started following people round the house to see what they are doing and is clearly enjoying the company. She is an all round gorgeous girl who would make a wonderful companion. I hope she finds her forever home soon.

Gemm came to stay with us for a few days post spay, she is so quiet that you wouldn't know she was in the house. She jumped up on the sofa and either snoozed one end, she got herself in some interesting positions or would just curl up next to you.

She does counter surf so was told off a couple of times but other than that she was the perfect house guest. I took her to Parkrun on Saturday where we just walked the course - I think she would have liked to have run it as kept going into a trot but we just kept to walk. Over the weekend I took her for a few other walks, we walked past cats with no reactions even when a neighbours cat walked up to me to say hello she ignored it, the only reactions I got was for a squirrel, a fox and rat (urgh) but just her ears came up, she made no attempt to pull to get to them!
I worked from home on Monday, she just got in the dog bed beside me and slept for the day

- I made sure that she went out for wee breaks but she was clean in the house, in fact she didn't poo in the garden and waited until she was out on her walks. I left her for about an hour on Saturday whilst I went shopping, there was no destruction only she'd made a nest with the blankets on the sofa, I think if the separation time was increased gradually she would settle. It was quite sad taking her back yesterday but hopefully there is a greyhound lover out there that has room on their sofa and heart for this sweet girl.

Gemm is a sweet dog. We enjoyed a shady walk in the woods today. And she has great ears!
