Current Status: Available
Gitano's Story: Gitano (which we've subsequently learned is pronounced 'Hee-tah-noh', as it's a Spanish word) grew up alongside a toddler. Sadly due to marriage breakup Gitano could no longer be kept. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Gitano will be neutered, is chipped, and fully vaccinated. Gitano is coming in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting his new family.
If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.
Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.
Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays. Gitano's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.
Original referral information: Urgent plea to save Gitano's life as dog transporter couldn't let it go and spent 2 weeks trying to find him a Rescue place and did literally save Gitano's life Gitano came into RescueRemedies on the 10th April 25

Anyone looking for a big, well mannered dog, look no further. Gitano was initially wary but walked very easily when we got out. We spent quite some time in the paddock and the big man didn't want to leave. We then went round the grounds and up the lane. I pretty much left him alone but took advantage of the occasional tail wag to move in for a stroke.
Our second walk was twice around the grounds then in the woods for 15 mins. Gitano plods along very nicely with no pulling, apart from when we left the paddock. I'd imagine he could take some handling if he started pulling, but that never occurred and it was a pleasure walking at a fairly slow pace.
He's a little withdrawn and wary at the moment so we'll see what happens over the next few weeks. I've got a soft spot for these big ole beasts that have to come in through no fault of their own. Hopefully there's a mastiff lover out there ready for their new companion.

Gitano is new in so a bit unsure of his surroundings and didn’t want to take treats whilst in his kennel today, but he came out with myself and Dom today and he’s an absolute gentle giant.. and giant he is. He was very much sussing out his environment and did exchange some tricks for treats whilst in the paddock (see third video).
He is a stunner and I’m sure he will settle in no time, can’t wait for more of the walkers to meet him. I think he’s replaced Matthew (homed) as biggest dog at the rescue!

Took this beautiful boy to the paddock today with Karen and he is just the sweetest chap. Very strong for the first part of his walk but he does settle and likes a sniff. Pictures really do not grant his size any grace at all, he’s an absolute unit!

Gitano showing off his skills with Karen today. He’s fussy with treats but Karen had some of Di’s famous liver cake and he was very keen. He stands so close to you when he wants some attention, so cute! Just an absolute teddy bear from what I’ve seen of him so far!

I took the Gentle Giant Gitano out today, well I was a bit taken aback by the size of him but he was very easy to harness and Dianne and I took a lead each just in case he pulled a bit but he was as good as gold , we took him for a little stroll around the woods and then the paddock which he really enjoyed , Ian joined us and Gitano was very amenable which I thought was impressive as we are all new to him

Showed a Spanish friend this picture of Gitano. Apparently I'm saying the pronunciation of his name is wrong.
Hi-ta-no! Ki-ta-no hc-ta-no? Big G.

Michelle and I took Gitano out for a gentle stroll late this afternoon.
He is very keen to get out so we threw a few treats in which he ate so we could get in with him.
Gitano is very easy to get ready just stands patiently but once the kennel is open he is so excited to get out its all hands on deck just till we are away from the kennels.
We took him along the lane and over to the field just to make a change and Gitano was a dream to walk.
He is not just beautiful to look at he also has the loveliest nature, we stopped for a couple of pictures on the way back.
Once back we gave him some of Diana’s famous liver cake which he lapped up.
Gitano will need someone with big dog experience and undoubtedly would be a very loving loyal companion.

Gitano was neutered yesterday so michelle and I paid him a visit to see if he wanted to go out for a walk.
He was very pleased to see us and even more keen to get going.
Gitano is very big and strong but listens when you want to redirect him.
He is affectionate, loves a fuss and loves food.
We had a gentle stroll along the lane then Gitano led us to the paddock where he likes to have a play.
