Simon's Story: Simon was found stray taken into a Vet who contacted the family on his chip. Several conversation with the family asking the Vet to put him to sleep. The Vets refused and said you need to come and collect your dog. They tried again and we agreed to take him in if the family would surrender him. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Simon is now neutered, chipped, and undergoing vaccinations. Simon came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting his new family.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Simon's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

We met Simon yesterday, oh he’s such a sad boy. He’s very sweet when you meet him, calmly let us change his harness and put on a collar and we went for a little potter around the grounds. He did not react at any of the dogs barking at the kennels and seems to be hard of hearing and has very cloudy eyes 😢
This darling old dog is in his twilight years and needs somewhere to rest, be warm and safe away from the stress of the kennels.

Lynne thought that Simon might benefit from a short break and we were happy to oblige. He climbed in to the car ok considering he is an older gent and travelled well, he enjoyed putting his head out of the window catching the wind.

We took Simon for a walk up the road once we were back, he likes to stop every few minutes to scent mark and have a good sniff so it is a gentle pace. He doesn’t pull and when we saw other dogs, he either didn’t notice them or met them well.

Simon does seem to have limited vision, this doesn’t affect him walking, or around the house but just to be aware of, and he is a bit hard of hearing, but can pick up certain pitches. I am sure he would appreciate a nice garden where he can have plenty of comfort breaks and a chance to relax.

He is a gentle soul who is a little lost and confused at the moment. He didn’t really settle for the first couple of days, he would sit down for a few minutes and then get up and wander, then go and lie down again, but not before he had adjusted all of the blankets and scrunched them up. He did this throughout the first night as well. He also humped a bit so was clearly stressed and adjusting. The second couple of nights he slept on the end of the bed, this was much better and he was more settled.

He clearly does like to play as we have a tub of toys and he got some out and bought them too us. Balls didn’t last very long and were chewed to pieces, even the stronger ones. He did do a bit of throw and fetch, and it was nice to see him enjoying himself.

We took him on a couple of longer walks, around a mile but he is older so didn’t want to over exert him without knowing what he was capable of. He even enjoyed a couple short sprints with my daughter across the park. He loved being outdoors with all the sights and smells and wasn’t phased by any of the passing dogs or horses.

Probably due to his age and the fact he was a little sad, he didn’t jump on the furniture or come and sit next to anyone, preferring to lie in the bed when he did settle, however, by Sunday he was coming in for cuddles and a good back scratch.

Simon is a lovely, slightly lost boy who needs to find a comfortable retirement home where he can feel safe and secure and be given the time to settle, when he finds that place I am sure he will give love and joy in abundance. I hope it comes soon 🥰

I took the lovely old Simon out today, he’s very sad in the kennel, crying all of the time.
He couldn’t hear me initially when I went into his kennel but after a bit of calling and some treats landing near him he turned around and pottered towards me.
We went for a lovely walk with Boo in the woods. He wandered along with a few spritely jumps over some railings and a little chew of a tree branch.
He’s an adorable old boy who needs a quiet home to rest in.

Simon is such a gentle soul. He was very happy to see me when I went to his kennel and he was ready to go in no time. He wasn’t bothered by the mud, but we both tried to find the path with the least amount of it. He was amazing on the lead and walked close to me the whole time.

Well, Simon went to my parents for foster. We picked him up from lovely Helen who had him overnight. We went to pets at home and let him pick a toy or two and he travelled very well in the car. When we got back, he was a bit unsettled to begin with of course, he’s had a lot of change. He was humping his bed, blanket and frankly the air but it soon stopped and he chilled out. We have cats and he seemed very interested in them so we kept him separate from him for now, there is a baby gate to give them the space they need and he pops to it every now and then to check in but moves away on his own accord. Simon has some hearing loss so communication is a bit tricky but he uses hand gestures very well considering. Simon is so affectionate, his tail wags the minute he sees you and he’s incredibly gentle with you. He loves a toy and we’ve actually had to take a few off of him to stop him from chewing them up but rope toys seem to be the winner so far. He’s very good around food, doesn’t beg and we point to his bed when eating and he will leave us completely alone. He’s got a lot of energy for an old boy, he was good in his walk today to the garden centre, no issues with the lead or around other dogs. He slept well over night and seemed to let us know when he wanted to have a toilet break. All this boy wants is affection and to bring his toy to you for a little game. He’s truly lovely.

What a lovely write up and pics Georgie - thank you. It was so great to meet your parents and to know that Simon was going to such a lovely home for his foster with such lovely people. He was a joy to have as an overnight guest. Of course, initially he was very unsettled and we had the same behaviours that you experienced with him. Once he had settled, however, he was a very happy dog trotting round with his favourite green frog in his mouth with his tail wagging non-stop. He enjoyed his walks and his meals - all in all a very happy dog and I just have the feeling, that if he accepts the cats, his stay with your parents will be such an enjoyable one. Kiss of love.gif

Simon was left on his own today while my mum had the dentist so I popped in to make sure he was okay. Being deaf he didn’t hear me and we had separated him and the cats in different rooms so I carried on around the house without him knowing I was there to see how he was. He seemed a little unsettled, up and a down a few times but not doing anything mischievous which is good. I took him for a walk and he was as old as gold!
