If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.
Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.
Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays. Xena's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.
Original referral information: XENA : This lovely girl was brought into kennels after being found roaming as a stray. Her microchip was not up to date with a current owner. We know her name is Xena & she is 3 years old, she is very large American bulldog female. Xena is very friendly with people but is particular with which dogs she likes & doesn’t like - she will need further training to cope with any reactivity/socialisation, has shown reactivity next to some dogs in kennels, is okay with Mavis whom she was kennelled next to. is always clean in her kennel which is a good indicator that she’s housetrained. She will need to be an only pet. Xena is very excitable, jumps up a lot & will need a home without young children for this reason. Xena is a truly lovely girl who loves a treat & a fuss - we would love to see her find her forever home. E x

We had a lovely walk with Xena on Sunday!
She is a large beautiful girl, and was very happy to let me in her kennel and put her leads on. Even though she is a large dog she didn't pull on our walk at all, and was happy to cross the road with no reaction to traffic. We didn't walk very near any dogs but she didn't pull towards any she saw only offering a friendly wagging tail. She enjoyed lots of sniffing and didn't seem to care much about stopping for treats, but she did take them very gently whenever she had one. As we came back towards the rescue she saw a couple of volunteers that she knew and was very excited to see them again and I saw the excited jumping up that had been mentioned, it was done with nothing but absolute excitement and adoration and I'm sure she would respond well to be trained to understand her size!
All in all, lovely walk and very lovely girl who I am looking forward to walking again if she isn't snapped up soon, which she should be!

I’ve walked Xena twice now, first time she was really unsure of me bless her, I got one of the girls to help me put her lead on as she seemed quite nervous. Well, today, easy peasy!!!! She was happy for me to put her leads on, and was absolutely wonderful to walk. She doesn’t seem overly fussed by people/dogs passing by but I’m sure once shes made some more human friends she will be much more herself as she’s only new in. She has the most beautiful fur, pure white with just one tiny freckle on the back of her neck and she’s very soft

Xena beeenaaaa! Having only been with us a little while we’re still getting to know each other but she seems more confident every time we meet. Today I was greeted with some lovely cuddles, she’s as tall as I am (that’s not too difficult though
). She’s a beautiful big girl, and still finding her feet here at the rescue, but I think we’re becoming good friends now
we went for a walk with Chelsey and Austin today, after a few barks at the start she was just perfect for our walk. She is a beautiful looking dog too, pure white with one little freckle on her neck and very soft, stunning girl.

Beautiful Xena, just had to get some snaps of her when we were in the paddock today, you can maybe grasp her size a little more here! She’s a big, beautiful girl, and definitely settling a lot more into kennel life. I thought she wouldn’t like the mud but she lead me into the paddock. She’s very smart and communicative, she’ll let you know where she wants to go, but she won’t put up a fight if you call her to go another way. We had a lovely walk today and she let her nose lead the way so for the most part we were just having a good old plod, suits me just fine!

I walked Xena for the first time today and she was brilliant. She was very excited when I went to her kennels and didn’t know whether to greet me or finish her breakfast or both?! I let her finish before going in but she treated me so wonderfully! She was calm but excited to go for her walk. I walked her into the village and she was great, no pulling or any trouble. She pulls slightly around other dogs, nothing hard to manage though. She’s very sniffy, excited to me out and about! All round a lovely, lovely girl.

Wow Wow Wow every time I meet and walk Xena I am blown away. Today was a special 'walk' as she accompanied me to the Vet again BUT this time was for spay. The Vets loved her and she didn't need a muzzle she is a softy-pie.
We haven't capture her true beauty yet on the photos...we will get it... she is very wrinkly with soft satin folds with her long ears and gentle walk.
American Bulldogs are something else....very under-estimated by the public until they come upclose ... then they admire the breed from hence forth

Xena is an absolute darling.
When I've walked her before, she's been initially nervous in her kennel but yesterday, she was very welcoming and keen to get out on a walk. I took her round the less muddy way - although her white fur still ended up covered in it! She doesn't like getting wet or muddy but sadly she was forced to accept defeat, being as there was just so darn much of it!
Xena was having fun jumping up on the benches we passed and we stopped for a little cuddle in the poet's hut.
As we started up the lane, we bumped into Boo and Shadow and took a stroll with them towards the village.
Xena was clearly very happy in their company and kept checking around to make sure her doggy pals were still with her. Very sweet.
Xena was perfectly behaved and a delight to spend time with.
