Jewels' Story: Jewels was taken in for welfare reasons over a year ago and now ready for rehoming. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving her life. Jewels is now neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Jewels came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting her new family.
If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.
Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.
Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.
Jewels' progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.
Original referral information: We were asked to help Jewels, the pleasure is all ours.

Welcome Jewels xx

Well, well
I think all.walkers will fall in love with this little lady on first meeting and I doubt she will be here for long.
Jewels is so calm and unphased by other dogs (or the cats). Very slightly worried by loud traffic when waiting to cross the road but a stroke and a 'good girl' was all that was needed to reassure her.
She has a calm energy about her and the most fabulous speckles on her ears.
The easiest to walk with no pulling at all. Yet another favourite

Re: Jewels Bulldog DofB ?2020 Hampton Temp Foster
Jewels is doing really well and is an absolutely lovely dog.
Jewels has been with us on foster for just over two days and she has settled in remarkably well. An absolute gem of a dog. Given the tough times she’s had, this lady has a big heart which she wants to share with you. She is desperate for love and wants to be with you as much as she is able to be.
We are currently integrating her with our other dog and she is gated off in part of the house. She stays here quite happily unless she feels there is something interesting going on and then she lets you know she’s still here. The signs are very positive with our other dog and they are happy out walking together. She can be a bit overwhelming for our dog at times, but I think it comes from keenness rather than anything else. Given it’s only 48 hours, the signs are very promising. Update, they are both now able to be in the same room at the same time and content with one another.
We have two cats and they are giving her a wide berth at the moment, she has shown mild curiosity but nothing more. We also have a sick chicken in the house in a crate and she hasn’t seemed overly bothered by it. On our walk this morning she was interested in a squirrel and tried to chase after it, ditto, one in the garden, but she is very responsive to you and a firm “No” and swiftly moves on.
She has been clean all three nights having been left from about 10pm to 7am. She has also settled well at bedtime and not made a noise.
She is easy on the lead. She goes off at quite a pace but is very manageable and attentive when you say something. I think she will be very easy to train.
She would make a fabulous addition to a household.
Kind regards
Verity

57 varieties of sleeping posture! Love her. Jewels is such a gem and its been a wonderful experience for her having been a year in kennels before we took her in.
Re: Jewels Bulldog DofB ?2020 Hampton Foster
Jewels has been with us for six weeks now, and she is an absolutely wonderful dog. If circumstances were different, we would have loved to keep her, but due to our senior dog Chuffie’s declining health and their differing exercise needs, we know she will thrive better in a different home. (Chuffie's forum topic.)
Jewels is a bit of a contradiction—in the best way! She loves being around people and will happily follow you throughout the day, always wanting to be part of the action. Yet in the evenings, she sometimes chooses to curl up on the sofa by herself rather than in the lounge with us.
She absolutely loves her walks and gets very excited when it’s time to go out. Once her harness is on, she won’t leave your side—sometimes even sitting on my husband’s feet while he puts his shoes on, just to make sure she isn’t left behind! This likely stems from a bit of insecurity, but it also shows just how much she enjoys being out and about.
Jewels is very friendly with people and other dogs, always eager to make new friends. Occasionally, she can get a little overexcited and pull on the lead—especially if there’s something interesting in the hedgerow—but she is generally responsive, eager to please, and very food-motivated. With a little continued training, she will flourish even more.
She does have a playful, attention-seeking side and loves to be the centre of things. If Chuffie is getting cuddles, she’s right there, trying to push in for her share! However, she responds well when asked to wait her turn and is learning patience.
Jewels is a bright, affectionate, and loving dog who will make a fantastic companion for the right family. She will thrive in a home that can give her plenty of love, guidance, and patience as she continues to build confidence.

So lovely to see Jewels relaxed with Chuffie. She is wow dog and hopefully will find her forever home soon. Love Chuffie!
Re: Jewels Bulldog DofB ?2020 Hampton Foster
Jewels has now been with us for nearly four months, and we continue to be so impressed by how far she’s come. Considering her difficult start in life and spending a full year in kennels, her progress has been nothing short of fantastic.
She’s grown in confidence and character. Jewels likes to be involved in everything and doesn’t want to miss out—which sometimes means she forgets just how big she is!
Jewel’s relationship with our cats is much improved. Her interest is now mild and manageable and the cats move freely around the house with barely a second glance from her. We believe she could live happily with dog-savvy cats given the right introductions.
Jewels remains a joy to walk, she is a strong dog but is very responsive on the lead and generally easy going out and about. She’s affectionate, clever, and always up for being part of the action.
Jewels would make a wonderful companion for a home that can give her love, structure, and a little patience as she continues to settle into life outside the kennels. She’s a truly special girl who deserves a family to call her own.

Re: Jewels Bulldog DofB ?2020 Hampton Foster
We’ve been fostering Jewels for just over five months so I thought I’d do a summary of all the things we’ve learnt about Jewels
People
She loves people and is very much a people person. She adores attention from my teenage children and everyone she meets. Equally, she is happy with her own company and we can leave her with no issues for 4-5 hours.
Walking
Jewels loves walking and being active. She gets very excited when she knows it time for a walk and will let you put her harness on without any issue, once you can get her to stand still! We walk her on an 8 metre retractable lead and this works well, it gives her space to run about but also allows us to maintain control. She is pretty good at coming back to you when you call her. If she ever needs reassurance she will come and brush against your legs. The only time she pulls, is when we see deer or squirrels, but this can be easily distracted and managed if you are aware. She hasn’t shown any reactivity to other dogs but doesn’t realise her own size can be a bit overwhelming for smaller dogs.
Nighttime Routine
She is very good overnight. We take her out to do a final toilet stop between 9-10pm. This has taken a bit of training, but her understanding is much better and it now only takes a couple of minutes for her to do her business. She then sleeps uninterrupted in our bedroom all night until about 6-6.30am. She has a mat to sleep on and she will sleep on that or the carpet. She has not made any attempt to sleep on the bed. She can however be a bit of a snorer on occasions.
Cohabiting with the cats and chickens
Jewels now lives quite happily with our cats and chickens. At nighttime, the two dogs and two cats all sleep in our room and the cats will come and go and just climb over her in the doorway with her barely registering. This is a significant improvement from when she first arrived. The cats now move freely around the house and she shows no interest.
We have recently let the chickens start free ranging again and after some initial introductions she leaves them to their own devices and if anything is scared of them despite the size difference!
Toileting
For a period of time, Jewels wouldn’t wee or poo on her walks and would hold it in and they go home and do it in the garden. We imagine that in her previous life she was probably not routinely walked or more recently being in kennels it was probably something she had never been taught to do.
Now 90% of the time, she will do her business on her morning and evening walk and this is improving all the time.
She is such a lovely dog with so much to give the right family/person. She would make a fantastic companion to either someone on their own or would happily slot right into family life.
