Duke's Story: Duke formally retired 6th December 24 after 126 races. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place. Duke is now neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Duke is sharing a room with Roxy. Duke came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting his new family.
If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.
Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.
Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.
Duke's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

Re: Duke (Ambitious Avicii) Ex Racing Greyhound DofB Dec 19 Horley Temp Foster
I should probably start by saying that Roxy and Duke don’t have to be homed together.
Both Roxy and Duke have adjusted amazingly well in a home environment.
They’ve learnt how to do the stairs, they’ve overcome their suspicions around what a television might be and they’ve given up on trying to take our food - you can’t blame them for not knowing the rules as Greyhound’s have mostly spent their lives in a kennel environment.
They’ve overcome the menacing wheelie bin etc. we’re working on the tumble dryer and vacuum at the moment.
These two beautiful dogs are like my shadow but can happily be left alone for short periods of time so far and this can be built up over time, as with any rescue pup.
They are both fantastic with our two children and love having a little cuddle time with anyone.
Roxy is one of the smallest Greyhound’s I’ve come across, she’s whippet size really.
Roxy is cheeky and very playful, she’s confident and likes to tell Duke she’s the boss but she can also be a little scared of very loud noises.
When Roxy is very excited she loves to spin and rub her thighs across your legs (almost as if she’s a cat!).
Roxy also walks really well on the lead, she’s bound to be a companion for wherever you want to go.
Duke is a silver fox! He’s so handsome and such a gentleman, he loves to rest his head on your lap for a cuddle.
Duke is so polite with Roxy, he doesn’t care how much she pushes him out of the way or if she finishes his dinner, he will let her do whatever she wants to.
Duke is slightly stronger on the lead when you first go for a walk but then he calms down.
Both of these beauties have given us endless giggles over their first week with us and I really hope someone sees in them what we do.

Duke assisted me with a new walker yesterday by offering his services for a supported walk. What a gentle creature he is, not bothered by cars, cyclists, other dogs, or even a squirrel ! although it's possible he didn't see the squirrel, cheeky though it was , the only thing he didn't like was the mud. He is a dream xx

Duke is so lovely and gentle
He helped me with a supported walk today
Duke and kennel mate Roxy were both very patient while we got them ready
Duke is not keen on mud but didn’t make a fuss while manoeuvring the very muddy grounds
We had a walk down the lane then a runaround in the paddock where they saw Ralph a small terrier and got very excited I reminded them their days of chasing at a stadium are over and now it’s time for them to find a loving home

Walked Duke and Roxy for the first time yesterday with a new walker and they were so friendly and well behaved. It was a pleasure to meet them and walk with them both.

Roxy and Duke have been on a few foster breaks with us now. Each time they come to us they settle straight back into our routine - Greyhound’s are just so laid back and easy, and yet full of affection and love.
Roxy feels comfortable enough to take herself upstairs to bed whilst Duke likes to hang out near you.
Separation training is going very well, they’ve been left for up to 1-hour so far with the radio on and were very happy to sleep.
Roxy and Duke don’t need to be homed together at all but they are so wonderful as a pair because they get on so well - I can even walk them on a lead splitter very easily.
Roxy is the smaller darker girl and Duke is the taller grey/distinguished boy.
