Domino's Story: Domino came into care on welfare grounds with a fractured leg. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Domino is neutered, chipped, front right lower leg repaired and rehab completed, and fully vaccinated. Domino came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting his new family.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Domino joined me on a new walker induction today. He is an absolute gem. He walked with loose leads the whole way round keepers cottage and waited patiently whilst Mathew and Spencer passed us.
He was very slightly jumpy with noises but it was quite windy this morning which can make some dogs a little spooked. And he is new in too so everything is strange for him. However, he soon worked out where treats were kept and was very affectionate to us all.
I doubt he will be with us for long but will have a queue of walkers whilst he is love4.gif

I’m lucky enough to be fostering Domino and what a special boy he is!!

Met him at RR and took him for a stroll, he was initially confident but not sure, having just come into the rescue he’s still figuring things out but was quietly waiting in his kennel, was very easy to harness and get out and walked beautifully and ignored other dogs around him

Once he was in the the car he quickly settled for the journey and barely noticed he was there

When we got home I let him have a good sniff around and explore before letting him settle which didn’t take long before he was next to me on the sofa with his head on my lap

We went for a stroll in the evening and again he was brilliant walking close by and looking back for reassurance when he was ahead

He knows some basics, sit, paw, wait, cross, takes himself to his bed if he fancy’s it and generally seems very relaxed

He slept very well, didn’t make a mess, he did swap between his bed next to mine and next to the door a few times but I’d expect this for his first night in new surroundings as he gets more comfortable

Had a good long walk this morning which he was wonderful on, he is weary of loud noises, cars starting up, old buses going by etc but keeping him the other side of me to the road and being conscious of what’s around he happily plods along

He’s a beautiful dog and everyone that met him and said hello said the same, one man even pulled his van over to say hello and ask about him. He’s great with people, very happy to be introduced and say hello, hasn’t jumped up on anyone in excitement and is the same with dogs, he’s interested but not over excited and easy to walk past other dogs if needed

He has the feet and socks of a blonde Labrador, the colouring and length in body of a German pointer, and the head of a mastiff so truly a unique looking dog!

He was great in the pet shop while I was stocking up and chose a crocodile toy and a couple of treats from the staff which he takes gently.

I’ll keep posting day by day for this special boy.

Day two with Domino

He’s started to relax he he becomes more familiar with where he is and me, slept really well through the night, no mess and no jumping on the bed, he hasn’t done that once!!

Forgot to mention how good he was in the bath tub getting washed on the first night, he was very calm, used the licks matt at first but when the water started on him he just stood there and had the odd water flying shake and was easy to dry off as well!!

Today we went to Virginia water and had a long walk around the whole lake(my fault for underestimating it)
He was brilliant all the way round, lots of dogs, people, joggers etc the dogs that are interested in him he is interested in, if they want to play then so does he, his initial thing is to try and jump with his paws up and play but he’s not hard to settle down at all

Something to be weary of is loud noises, a leaf blower was nearby and I could see his stance change and kept him close by with lots of reassurance, the same with a park cart, keeping him close on a short lead and lots of reassuring and keeping his attention helps and he moves on nicely

He wasn’t too interested in the ducks or the swans and was very gentle and friendly with people who stopped to ask about him (a lot of people)

Back home for a good sleep, later a friend came round and the knock on the door did cause an Initial bit of a growl but with reassurance and a introduction he was absolutely fine

I popped to the shop across the road and knocked on the door before coming into see if he reacted the same and he didn’t make a noise so it makes me think it’s his protective instinct that caused the initial growl

He’s been so calm and easy going and really will make someone a brilliant companion!

Day 3 with Domino

Another good nights sleep, no mess, no barking, no jumping up onto the bed, he slept really well!!

A little toilet break stroll around the houses first thing and he saw a cat that he did want to investigate with enthusiasm but when we got round the corner he had forgotten about it

We had breakfast then went to a secure field, didn’t take him two seconds before he was bouncing around and running circles around me,
Before today he hasn’t seemed that interested in playing, he would take a toy in his mouth but not grip, no rough and tumble style play, in the field, off lead he was bounding around and loves to chase after a thrown toy and flick it around in his mouth. He hast quite mastered bringing it back and dropping it every time but he a did a few times

His recall is good if he’s looking at you, but if he’s already having a sniff around then that’s his focus for a few seconds before coming back me

He’s extremely inquisitive and likes exploring but happy when you call him in for a good scratch
We spent the last 15 minutes slow walking up and down nicely, pausing, waiting for command to walk etc, lots of treats kept him glued to my side

Took him down the high street again when it was quite busy, keeping myself between him and the road with traffic on and with lots of reassurance, nose taps when he looks at me he stayed very calm and happily plodded along, responds well to

‘wait’ and ‘cross’ when coming to roads to cross

‘Ahh’ will generally get his attention and get him to pause

‘What’s this’ keeps him interested in me and looking towards me

Another good day with this special boy.

Domino days 4+5

Quieter days spent more locally exploring and a bit of testing while I ran some quick errands

Domino has been absolutely brilliant at night every without fail, he understands when it’s bed time and is quick to settle down and get to sleep, without storing till the morning, in the morning he seems quite happy to either go out straight away or have breakfast first and wait a little while before going out, I like to give him an hour after eating breakfast and then we head out for a nice walk, he’s been clean every night!!

I also noticed he will let me know when he’s needs the toilet by going to the door on his travels about , he’s a very relaxed and content dogs in the house and will follow you about untill he decides it’s
time for another nap
He’s met some new people over the last couple of days and has cozied up to the legs when they come in and been great in saying hello, no over excited jumping, just a nudge to say hello and let people know he’s there

During the day he likes to sit in his spot on the sofa and sleep, he will curl up next to me and enjoys a fuss if you make it and doesn’t mind if you don’t, he does mouth sometimes but it’s been very gentle and absolutely no sign of aggression when he does this, just exploring with his chops

On walks he’s been great, very happy to explore new places and will go from side to side having a sniff, if he does get fixated on a patch then it doesn’t take much for him to start following again

A couple of times with loud cars, passing ambulances he does react and his reaction is to go towards not away so you do have to be wearing off this, I’ve found being weary of my surroundings, what’s going on is important, if there’s something he won’t like I’ll turn him away from it, legs either side of of him and hold his collar and give lots of reassurance and generally he’s seems ok, if he sees joggers and cyclists coming he has been fine but if they surprise him from behind he can be a bit startled

I am still learning his reaction with others dogs, generally it’s positive, we had a lovely play with a bouncy 11 month cane corso in the local park with both of them bouncing off each other playfully for 20 minutes, some smaller dogs he does seem to be more weary and apprehensive off but it is not all of them!

Domino day 6

Another clean night and good sleep, no jumping on the bed and didn’t hear him stir once!

We had breakfast first then went for a nice walk to a local island so he could run around on a long lead, he absolutely loves being able to run freely and bounce around the place, lots of sniffing around and running and sliding, there was a lot of other dogs in the area which he didn’t seem too interested in and was happy to carry on following me, if he does stop to explore something it just takes a call or two and he bounds over

Being able to throw a toy for him is great and he loves it, will chase after it and then take his time coming back but 90% of the time comes back uninterrupted

We came out a clearing to be met by 8-10 mix of breed dogs off lead with a dog walker and I thought this could be a test, he was very well behaved and let other dogs sniff and sniffed them without negative reactivity and was happy to carry on walking when I called him

3 other smaller dogs, a jack russel and two shitzu then came bounding over barking at him but again he was very good and plodding along without any reaction! I was very impressed!

He met lots of people as well and they all said how lovely he is, how unique his appearance is and what a gentle dog he’s been; he has always greeted people calmly

We passed a cat on the way back and he did want to chase that but was easy to move on

After good couple of hours out he spent most of the days sleeping!

I wanted to see what he was like in a different environment so went to a local pub with him and sat out side away from the road but not too far( he was a bit weary and constantly looking from place to place and with lots of reassurance was generally quite still

There was man who picked up his Christmas’s tree and started walking that Domino did not seem to like, I think it’s anything that isn’t clearly a person he is very unsure off

In the pub itself he was a little nervous walking through but sat and layed nicely once I had a seat in a quiet area and welcomed people that had a gentle approach, in a slightly busier areas he was again good, a group did start to come in in 3s and 4s and when they were all together I could see he was on edge and uncomfortable, there was a small growl but I was able to walk him out keeping a tight lead without any issues

Domino really is a brilliant dog, he’s fun to be around, calms and sweet at home, once he meets people quickly warms to them, it’s just when he is out and about he is a but unsure of his surroundings, I’ve always kept my hand near the collar/ harness and always been able to control him, as I’ve got to learn his signs it’s become very easy. He’s is a loving dog and with the right owners some patience and constant love and attention he deserves he really will blossom.
