Matthew's Story: Matthew has grown up with children and a cat. Due to emergency circumstances his owner can't take him with them to their new accommodation. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Matthew is now neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Matthew is a LARGE dog (83 kilos), good on all accounts except concerned around Labradors due to being set upon by one in his past. Matthew came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting his new family.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Matthew's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

Original referral information: Vets called us as family had run out of all options and was going to have to put him to sleep. The Vets were so grateful to us considering taking him in they are going to neuter him for us free of charge.

Matthew came into RescueRemedies on the 26th Sept 24

Master Matthew has arrived. He was neutered today and a little wobbly on his legs as he got out the dog mobile.

Trained to hand signs:
  • Index and Middle fingers together and raise SIT
  • Index and Middle fingers together and sweeping down movement is DOWN
  • Touch his nose signals to him permission to eat his food
He wears a halti for his walks.

He looks like a larger Mollykins but Black with a white star on his chest. All will be revealed but ATM he is sleeping heavily.....

Matthew is the definition of a gentle giant. He was so polite whilst being harnessed! We had a gentle plod around the grounds and up and down the lane. Slack leads, for such a big boy he walks amazingly well. He sits very well too, responding to his hand signal, and takes treats oh so gently.
He got more confident as he spent more time with us and will definitely show more personality as he becomes more familiar with his surroundings.
I don’t think I could sing his praises loud enough!

Met the gentle giant that is Matthew on Saturday !

WOW
He is a big boy!
The photos weren’t doing him justice so I put together a very short clip of him and Emma 🤪

A really lovely boy who was an absolute angel the whole walk. He had Sandos In front of him and Austin behind and paid no attention to either of them.
I think we are all in love 😍

Marcus my own dog can bark incessantly at other dogs in the adjacent paddock of a morning/ evening.

I walked Matthew today. It took a little time to harness him, but once done he happily went off for an explore. We started by slowly walking around the grounds, then went to the paddock (he doesn’t play ball), and after a short time he went to the gate. Off we went for a long walk, slowly at first, then at a better pace. Totally non-reactive to other dogs, even when little Toby was shouting in his face. Very friendly towards strangers. He loved his walk, but on return I discovered he does NOT like Beau, so if Beau is in the same block he needs to be shut in. A pleasure to walk Matthew.
