Ernie's Story: Ernie was found abandoned and unclaimed within a Northern council pound. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Ernie is neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Ernie came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting his new family.
If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.
Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.
Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.
Ernie's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.
Original referral information: Can anyone offer on one of these dogs the pound is nearly full: Ernie. Male Lurcher 7months. A little shy but sweet & affectionate. Never been a problem in kennels

Re: Ernie Lurcher DofB Sept 23 RRemedies Centre
I met the very sweet Ernie today and we had a lovely walk. He’s quite timid and is very happy stand behind you whilst other dogs go past, he didn’t pull, bark or cause a fuss at all. He is a total delight to walk and I look forward to getting to know him better.

Ernie is a little heart stealer. One look into those liquid brown eyes and you are smitten.

I met Bernie for the first time yesterday when myself and another walker took him for a walk with his kennel mate Pixie. I walked Pixie but every so often I felt a little black, warm snout in my hand as Bernie came up for contact and to say hello. He and Pixie are bonded already and like to walk side by side. Bernie is absolutely adorable and so pretty. He is such an easy walk - no reactivity to anything as yet but just an interest in everything we passed - dogs and people. Absolutely lovely boy.

Ernie is just adorable! So soft and chilled. He kept bumping his nose against my hand, while I was walking Pixie, just to make sure I gave him some attention too. I cannot believe he hasn’t been snapped up yet.

Ernie is just such a lovely little dog - gentle natured and so easy to walk. He trots along beside you or just behind you (if I am walking Pixie) and often I feel a little face in my hand - maybe he is hoping for some treats - he loves treats! All the dogs deserve treats for putting up with the knee high mud I feel.
He and Pixie really do seem to have bonded and have a great affection for each other. He is the easier dog to walk as he manages to ignore squirrels and doesn't seem reactive to anything. He gives the impression of just wanting a quiet life surrounded by love and comfort.
He is yet another dog to add to my favourite list and that is already very, very long. Hopefully Ernie and maybe his kennel mate Pixie will get homed very soon.

Re: Ernie Lurcher DofB Sept 23 Dorking Temp Foster
From what we know about his background, we don’t think he has seen much of normal everyday life. As a puppy, he can understandably be a little spooked by loud noises (trains, traffic, lorries, vans, building works etc). Everything seems new to him, but he has been learning lots & is very brave, taking everything in his stride. He is very curious about everything - so many new sounds, smells & sights to find out about. He prefers to assess strange objects like bicycles, pushchairs joggers etc from a distance initially, but he’s seen quite a few of these now so he's getting more used to them. He’s such a brave boy - if anything new or loud stops him in his tracks, once that thing has passed, he just shakes it off and carries on exploring.
He can be shy with other people and dogs, needing a bit of space at first, but if he is approached with a calm & gentle energy, anyone who meets him agrees that he is a gorgeous boy.
Ernie is very, very intelligent. Sometimes he will take a pause on a walk, but I think he is just taking in & processing all the sights, sounds and smells around him.
At home, he loves brain games & his chew toys. He very quickly worked out how to get the kibble treats out of his Kong Wobbler. And it doesn’t take him long to find the treats in his snuffle mat. We’ve been hiding small pieces of cooked chicken (after blotting off any chicken juice) in it.
He also LOVES playing fetch. Inside the home, we’ve been playing with his Kong Jump’n Jack - this is not only great as a dental chew toy, but makes a good substitute for a ball inside the home, as it doesn’t bounce and roll as much. He’ll bring it back to you and almost immediately (after a quick chew), drop it for you to roll again.
He likes his Kong Classic, too, especially with a small spoonful of plain Greek yoghurt in it. We haven’t experimented with other treat fillings for it yet, as he is still getting used to his new regular diet since he’s been on foster. I must sound like I have shares in the Kong Company (I don’t!) - they are just really great chew & puzzle toys for him.
Another of Ernie’s favourite things to do, after eating, walks or playtime, is to snuggle up and / or stretch out next to you on the sofa for a long snooze. Sometimes we chill on the sofa, listening to relaxing music for dogs. He is also fascinated by TV. His favourite programme is, of course, The Dog House! Well, to be honest, we haven’t been watching much else recently.
Ernie would love a home with a garden for him to run around in and explore. He deserves the best in life.
