Kennel sleepover with Jacqui
This Saturday night, I had the absolute pleasure of spending the evening snuggled up with the beautiful Jacqui. She truly is a lady in every sense of the word.
I wondered over to her kennel just before midnight. Until then, she’d only seen me in passing as I walked by with other dogs, so it’s no wonder she was a little puzzled to see someone suddenly arriving in her bedroom so late at night.
At first, Jacqui was shy and kept her distance, unsure about this unexpected visitor. I sat quietly on the floor just outside her kennel, speaking softly and giving her time to adjust. Within five minutes, her curiosity won out. She trotted over to my lap, sniffed me gently, and let me know in her own sweet way that she was comfortable with my presence.
I was starting to get chilly and I set up my bed beside hers, leaving the porch door open so she could come and go as she pleased. Jacqui, ever the tidy lady, stepped outside for a late-night bathroom break before returning to her bed which, as I soon discovered, she had lovingly carried her dinner bowl into earlier on in the day.
I settled down, expecting her to curl up in her own bed. But after a few spins in her blanket, she made a beeline for mine, curled herself into a tiny ball against my side, and stayed there for the whole night. It was such a tender, heartwarming moment. I felt so grateful and a little in awe that this gentle soul had welcomed me with such trust and affection. Jacqui is truly a master snuggler, and an absolute joy to be around. She let me wrap my arms around her and rest my head right against hers.
In the middle of the night, I had to get up for a quick trip to the ladies. Jacqui hopped up to join me, thinking it might be time for a bit of play. For a few happy minutes, she bounced around her kennel, tail wagging, before quickly calming herself and waiting patiently for me at the kennel door. I couldn’t resist taking her out with me — she was so calm and gentle, even with the sounds of insects and creatures all around us that late at night. Once we returned, she snuggled right back under the blanket, pressed close against me until morning.
I even put my little night lamp on and read her a bedtime story, getting her used to my voice, even though she was clearly already comfortable with me. She nestled in, content and safe and happy that someone was with her to snuggle up to. But I was clearly the lucky one here!
We were up around 8am and made our way to the walkers’ area, where Jacqui happily greeted everyone she saw with a wagging tail. The moment she spotted her foster friends, she was so happy! It was clear she felt such joy in seeing them which showed us all how deeply she will bond with the people who adopt and love her.
I can’t imagine why this wonderful girl hasn’t found her forever home yet. She is a true lady — gentle, loving, and so easy to be around. She has this quiet way of making you feel peaceful and happy, and you can’t help but smile in her company. I know that others were keen to kennel share with her that night; she’s that special.
I can’t wait for the day I hear Jacqui has finally found the home she deserves. I would literally would have adopted her myself that morning if I didn’t already have 2 at home. She is, quite simply, amazing.
