The most handsome fella has been back staying with me for the last week and it's been wonderful!
I collected Pierre from EB on Sunday afternoon and he was very excited to see me. It's his third foster break with me now so he's becoming more familiar and confident.
Having said that, he was quite overwhelmed when we got home and it still took him a couple of hours to settle in. So I did what I always do and kept my energy low and calm, left only the living room and spare bedroom (Pierre's 'safe' spot) doors open, kept a trailing lead on Pierre and left him alone to go from bed to bed to blankets to bed. If he came over to me, I softly said hello and gave him a little stroke. When he presented me his bum, I'd give it a gentle scratch. If he had his toy in his mouth I didn't try and take it from him as I know he uses it to self sooth and regulate his emotions. I've learned that when Pierre wants to play, he will push his toy into your hand and let go of it, step back and wait for you to throw it. This wasn't the time to play.
Pierre gives the impression that he is a confident boy but the reality is that he's carrying a lot of trauma which is going to take time to shake. He needs patience and reassurance. Given all that he's been through, it's amazing how he's open to love and willing to start trusting.
As the week has progressed, Pierre has become braver with our walks. On previous foster breaks he didn't like to venture too far but I think he gained some confidence from following the other dogs at the charity walk recently and this week he's walked really well and explored new paths. He even headed into the woods!
On one of our lunchtime walks we spotted another Frenchie on the other side of the road. It was hilarious; both planted their feet and just stood there staring at each other. So I crossed over toward the other Frenchie who, by this time was lying down and definitely not going to budge without a meeting. So we let them have a 3 second sniff and I moved Pierre on telling him what a good boy he is! When I looked back, the other Frenchie was on his back demanding belly rubs. It made me chuckle as I knew Pierre would do this too and sure enough on our way home, he delivered!!
What we know about Pierre so far:

Clean in the house (but doesn't tell you he needs to go)

Loves his food

Snores (even when awake)

Loves bum scratches

Sits when asked (but only when he thinks he's getting food)

Can be left alone for a few hours

Likes to run; potentially a good jogging partner

Alert to cats

Doesn't like mud

Doesn't like the rain
Pierre can be a bit jumpy when excited so we're working on him being calm with all paws on the floor before I open the door.
He's starting to learn his name now and responding when I ask him to come to me. It's early days and he's doing well but definitely needs more work; especially when outside with all the distractions.
This break is coming to an end and I'm going to miss my snuggles and morning kisses.

It would be soooo lovely for Pierre to find his furever home; he's so deserving and will be such a wonderful companion. Until then, I'll be counting down the days to his next visit when he'll be staying with me over the Easter break.

- One exhausted pup after robbing everyone of treats at Lynne's birthday charity walk!

- Ready to face the rain in my new coat!

- Do we really have to get up?!

- Shall we snuggle instead?!

- Great idea; if I do say so myself!
