Today was my fourth date with Quinton. Our first was three weeks ago walking with another dog. Quinton was fine with him and traffic, but even in the quiet woods seemed too anxious to focus on anything, just rushing on past smells and loo stops and pulling. The next week we went out solo and he still found it hard to settle, although we achieved some nice heeling on my left where he was more relaxed, and he is sensitive to the lead, and where you are. He had a burst of barking for no obvious reason on the way back and frequent shake offs to release tension. So we tried something different this week, going to the paddocks instead to let off steam without the stress. There Quinton trotted about happily and revealed his love of 'fetch', hurtling after the ball and barking for me to throw it ASAP. He will play this indefinitely, given the chance. The only thing that competes is the occasional kennel chorus which he joins in and today he was very excited by dogs passing the paddock. Quinton chased along the fence barking, and was still going back and forth looking for them after they were out of sight. It seemed he wants to play; there was no growling. We continued to have a lot of fun with more fetch in the mud and he was disappointed having to go back indoors, but accepted some quiet strokes and a piece of sausage in consolation. He also set about having a good wash.

More high energy fun in the big paddock on Friday. Quinton is able to burn off some of his pent up enthusiasm and feel safe here, happily trotting around, nosing the leaves and amusing himself. He was able to focus with great satisfaction on chewing and pulling apart suitable toys. Though several metres away, if I moved to go, he was aware immediately and looked up ready to stop. A gentle "good boy" seems to assure him it's ok to continue.
We also played fetch, which he loves. He decides when he's ready to leave the ball for you. Being very excited, he can be barky and get close with his teeth, nosing to hurry you up. There's a chance he might catch your hand accidentally, so getting him to step back before you pick it up is advisable. Perhaps it's as well to take breaks between games to simmer him down a bit as it can get quite intense.

After other calmer activities he went into kennel very nicely and showed that he knows both "sit" and "bed". Getting tidbits for both and remaining relaxed and content with being left.

Well done, little mate.

A few days late with Quinton’s latest write up but here it is!

We fostered Quinton for the longer period of 5 days this time as Felicity was off work for the week. As always a real pleasure to have him and such a shame to have to take him back.

As it was a longer stay we implemented a little structure and he slept in his own bed (previously he’s opted for ours but he’s a bit of a bed hog!). It only took about 30mins super nanny style taking him back to his bed and now he goes straight to his bed in the evening and only comes up for morning cuddles when invited.

We’ve been working on quietening down some of the random barking when we’re out and about and he’s making great progress, he’s so good natured and eager to please. He settles into his walk after about ten minutes of excitement. He still likes to say a long hello to other dogs, especially in the distance, but it’s not aggressive and the most it usually attracts are confused looks from his less chatty friends.

We also had to leave him for up to 3 hours a few times in the week. Although he does seem to get a little bit anxious when he sees you leaving, he’s not been destructive whilst we have been out and only chews his toys - the one exception being the top of a water bottle that was red and plastic like his favourite kong ball!

VERY late with Quinton’s last update but since he’s officially on the reserved page, better late than never!

Another lovely weekend fostering Quinton. He seems to be getting much better with his barking when out and about, he has an excited first 10 mins then settles down and only barks when he sees another dog. He is responding well to being brought onto a short lead and told ‘quiet’ and knows that we won’t be going anywhere until he calms down.

At home he’s as good as gold and has enjoyed the new smells of the Christmas tree and decorations without showing any interest in destroying or climbing them.

He gives affection in reams and is very sweet natured in the home. Quinton loves to be with people and your affection is awarded with happy squeaks and kisses. He loves belly rubs and tickles.

Heartbreaking to take him back to the kennels, especially now that he’s in the main block and could see us going in and out to walk the other guests. Fingers crossed he gets his forever home so he gets the love and consistency he deserves, and his new family get to experience all of his affection!

Quinton his now enjoying a Christmas break with us and thoroughly enjoyed his stocking yesterday.

A little late with Quinton’s Christmas update but better late than never!

He stayed with us for two and a bit weeks over Christmas, the poor little chap looked so sad and confused when we took him back but he had a lovely Christmas break and really enjoyed being around lots of new people on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. He joined us for the family tour, settling well in other houses and staying polite and calm despite lots of delicious smells! He loves people and went from person to person for cuddles, and he behaves so well with guests that come to our home who all comment on what a lovely dog he is. His highlights were getting his own stocking on Christmas Day along with everyone else, lovely long walks every day, and being the centre of attention at our New Years Eve party where everyone toasted a forever home for Quinton in 2020 😍

He made great progress on his behaviour out and about by the end of his stay but needs the consistency of a long term home to keep it up as he forgets some of what he’s learned when he goes back to the kennels. I think stress of being in kennels adds to that as he’s much calmer when he’s been with us for a while.

Looking forward to a 4 day weekend with him this week, but looking forward to him finding his forever home more!
