Baxta and I entered pastures new today - we went for a walk without a ball!!!! 😲 We started off with a customary ten minutes in the paddock playing fetch and working on focus. He is getting there and one of the nice things about him is if you hang on to the ball and don’t throw it he doesn’t try and take it off you. After that we went for a walk in the woods and within a few minutes he must have dropped his ball somewhere. What I found though was he was really responsive to his name and also he has a good ear for the rustling of my treat bag. We came to an entry point for a nearby stream and walked along for fifty metres or so to an exit point with Baxta lapping the top of it all the way.
On our way back we met an out of control dog. Now when I say out of control I don’t mean that nastily. It was a young dog who was off lead and didn’t return to its owner instantly even when distracted. The owners had let him get just a bit ahead of them and when I saw him we stopped and moved off the track to let them pass. Unfortunately the young dog ran forwards straight at us and I committed the cardinal sin of putting myself between them. Baxta snapped his chops once at the other dog but didn’t lunge or really show any aggression. The other dog of course was just young and Baxta was teaching him some manners. It’s been a feature of lockdown that new dog and new owners haven’t had interaction with other owners and dogs which means the younger dogs have missed out on their education and socialisation. We walked away with the young dog keeping coming after us but my little star just showed him his back and eventually the owners got close enough to capture their dog. They did hand me a dog biscuit for Baxta and we parted on good terms.
Baxta showed no signs of being wound up by this and we both cursed the fact we had worn black on such a hot day as he showed me the way home.

Baxta was our third dog today and what a bundle of energy he is. We went straight to the paddock where we burnt some of it off before our walk. He was good on his walk and trotted along having a good snif and eating grass, at the river he had a good wade around before we returned to the paddock again for more ball cames.

Hot day today so we stayed in the woods and the stream wherever we could. After a quarter of an hour in the paddock playing fetch and working on sit (he’s great at that), leave (also a strength of his) and looking at me instead of the ball (we are getting there) we strolled out. Yet again he showing how clean he is by working his way right into the bushes to do his business. He loved dragging me through the stream and we stopped a couple of times to get my water out my rucksack and he helped himself to my treat bag, cheeky boy! When we arrived back at the centre we hung around in the shade and Baxta nudged up against me for some back scratching. He lost all interest in me when I returned him to his kennel and his breakfast was there. 0002.gif]

Baxta and I went for our first walk together yesterday and had a lovely time! He was extremely friendly when I went to meet him in his kennel and take him out. He was full of energy and thoroughly enjoyed our trip through the woods and up to the stream where he had fun splashing around!
He found a ball on the way back and would every now and then drop the ball at my feet so I'd roll it back to him :) He's a real cutie and a big bundle of joy!

I always make sure to take a ball into Baxtas kennel with me when taking him as it’s definitely a favourite of his. Unfortunately we lost the ball at the kennels yesterday but we still had a lovely long walk. He is definitely a water baby and we always make sure to stop off so he can have a dip. We finished our walk with some time in the paddock where he could probably spend hours chasing the ball. He’s an amazing dog and I can’t wait to see him find his forever home!

It was a chilly, wet day yesterday but that didn't dampen Baxta's spirits. He was having a fabulous time in the paddock with Ian and Nicky.

Had a really nice walk with Baxta yesterday.
As usual we went to the paddock first to play fetch with Baxta's tennis ball and burn off some pent up energy so we could have a nicer walk.
We crossed over the road and walked past the showjumping premises to the under construction greyhound rehoming centre to see the state of things there. Baxta walked nicely and wasn't fazed by a showjumping horse and rider or some squirrels. We continued past the greyhound centre to where flytippers had dumped an old sofa. We sat on it together for a while and then Baxta practised some commands and tricks in return for treats.
We retraced our steps . A dumper truck was delivering aggregate to the greyhound site and we stood to one side as it reversed in. It had an onboard warning bleep and pre recorded message from a male voice. I had a laugh as Baxta couldn't work out who was talking, tilting his head quizically.
We walked under the motorway before stopping off in the playfield near the new housing development. Baxta had a rollaround on his back on the grass and tummy rubs.
As usual he was fine with traffic, people and general enviroment.
When we got back to kennels we went to the paddock to play ball. Baxta loves this .
He may be 8 but there is loads of fun and life ahead of him.
He's bright and active and has lots of tricks and commands as befits a dog who has lived his life in a home.
He's pretty much an "off the peg" dog, surely someone out there will home him ,take him on walks and adventures and of course play ball with him!

What a lovely, enriching walk he had with you Ian. I don't know where half of the places are that you mentioned! Baxta really does seem a great dog. I gave him some treats before I left the kennels this afternoon and he took them very politely. Let's hope the right home comes along soon. :crossfingers.gif: :crossfingers.gif: :crossfingers.gif:

I walked Baxta for the first time yesterday. I gave him a ball in his kennel and off we went. I could tell he had a lot of energy so having read previous posts headed straight for the paddock to burn it off. Had a great game of ball with Baxta, he really does love chasing round the paddock and chewing on his ball. When we then went for a walk it was a lovely relaxed stroll taking in the sights and smells. :smiley-chores002.gif: Looking forward to more games of ball but hoping this boy finds his forever home soon.

Andrew and Rachel came to meet Baxta today and enjoyed a long walk and time playing fetch in the paddock.

A big step for the family who have wanted a dog for a long time. Hoping Baxta will settle and his family learn to read his needs and manage his ball obsession! Some will remember Andrew who walked amongst for many years
