Bernard's Story: Bernard was owned by his former family since he was a puppy. He also lived with a cat and chickens. Bernard is of a nervous disposition and can nip/bruise outstretched human hands - he is special needs. Bernard has bitten twice: once when caught in bared wire, while the owner was trying to free him, and the second time while the owner was trying to remove a precious item from Bernard's mouth. Bernard has received good training and is walked on an extender lead. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Bernard is neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Bernard is in kennels near Guildford whilst he awaits his new family.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, please complete our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. It is always the first step in our rehoming process. Upon application, you must be ready to take in your new dog within seven days. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum adoption donation is £175. This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

'Bernards progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal a different picture and positive skills as they build trust.
Original Referral information:
We have been asked to help Bernard as his owners are nervous of him, and no other Rescues would take a dog who has bitten.

Bernard arrived in rescue a nervous and anxious young dog .Initially bewildered by the people walking past his kennel talking to him "The walkers " he soon learned their kind words, were followed by treats. He showed a young enthusiasm for play and developed a trust with the walkers by fetching and returning tennis balls .

Since then Bernards confidence has grown week by week , he's very excited when he sees his leads his walks mean everything to him .

Bernard has been very accepting of Muzzle training and happily wears a muzzle in public during his daily walks or on the occasions a trip to the vets is necessary.

He loves scenting and is very interesting in his surroundings . His daily walk consists of passing cows , swans , other dogs on and off leads , squirrels and other wildlife. He's a little nervous of the large standing cows so may bark, but once encouraged he quickly walks past .

Bernhard loves the water and will happily wade in on long lines up to his neck no matter what the temperature!.

Bernard dislikes motorbikes and will bark at them but again with support he stops , looks back for reassurance and continues on his way.

He is supported past joggers and cyclists with a sit and treat, mainly ignoring them but on occasion we have encountered cyclists stopping at speed in front or behind us which has made Bernhard feel anxious so a bark or two has followed to let them know he felt uneasy , calling his name he responds immediately and we return to our lovely walk.

Bernard knows all the basic commands and is very treat driven , Bernard aims to please and even if he feels uncomfortable in a situation with positive instruction you can guide him through it.

Bernard will need support in the home, as he hasn't lived in a home environment for a while and isn't used to a knock or bell at the door .
With a slow , calm introduction he will need support meeting neighbours, relatives , friends but this must be done at Bernhards pace as he may become anxious if introduced too quickly.

Bernard provides affection on his terms , again with time and trust he slowly builds a bond with those important people too him , and relies on their support through difficult situations.

He's a wonderful young boy , clever who is eager to learn .He surprises me daily with the new things he's learnt and a happy beaming smile will greet you everyday .

Bernhard LOVES the water particularly on a hot Day. Today he stood deep in the water, body submerged watching swans gliding from side to side. He was very well behaved slightly transfixed as they passed by . :cool.gif:

Fun in the sun yesterday with this happy lad!
A nice welcome in his kennel, easy to harness and off we went.
I took him around the kennel grounds and paddock on a long line and Bernie couldn’t have been happier.
Bernie is very Cocker - busy busy busy happy happy happy!
He loved snuffling and investigating and it was just lovely to see him doing the busy Spaniel thing.
