Sheldon's Story : Extremely neglectful background left for several years by himself in an empty flat is a utility area with no visual stimulation. Separated by but joined by a Collie pup over the last 7 months who was in another area. Fed sporadically like once a week. Sheldon has lived in his own excrement knee high after 2 years of total neglect and sporadic verbal abuse: Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Sheldon is now neutered; chipped and fully vaccinated. Sheldon is now in foster in Bognor Regis
Sheldon was abandoned in a property living in an unheated out-house in his own excreta for 2 years with a weekly visit with food dumped in. Yes his owner had mental health problems but we are told he had a life before that existence & that shines through. He can live alongside other dogs but plays hard & this can be misread. He is noisy & forthright & could accommodate. Either only dog or supportive terrier savvy owners. Dazzling
PLEASE NOTE: Dog laws have changed with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers. Our Rescue asks new owners to maintain dogs on lead in public spaces and manage encounters for at least 4 months until sure of their dogs instincts & skills, some need to be retained always on a lead, so as not to place dog's lives at risk (Destruction or Control Orders are common place nowadays).
***PLEASE HELP OUR LONG STAY DOGS: Our min. adoption donation £175, which supports our work and Is non returnable. We will offer an alternative dog should our dog not settle given adequate time and reassurance. Rescue Remedies offers their dogs back up for life and exist on the goodwill of our supporters and volunteers.
Please click for Sheldon's thread for regular updates, new pictures and videos. To apply to home a dog, you must be ready within 7 days and complete a homing questionnaire submitted Online We work fast to secure our dogs their loving homes and can be talking to up to 10 families at any one time. Please remain open: We have the dogs we have. Our dogs need a supportive family to offer patience, time & tolerance to allow them to settle. Sheldon's progress through our Rescue below
Original Referral information : We work with our dogs & often reveal a different picture & positive skills as they build trust. 30.11.16: EXTREMELY URGENT WELFARE CASE- CAN YOU HELP?
Lynne,
Is there any chance that the space you could take either of these emergencies? They are cruelty cases of the worst kind.
Extremely distressed dog warden contacted us last night about these two. The situation they have been rescued from is horrific and the lives they have endured thus far have been absolutely hellish in every way. They will need a rescuer with the therapeutic skills and understanding to help them begin again.
The dogs are from the same home but have been kept separately in different parts of the property with no interaction (i.e. they may well not get on, we don't know).
Sheldon
Entire male JRT, 3-4 years old. He has a flea allergy and is thin and absolutely terrified. His life has been characterised by severe cruelty and total neglect. His owner had severe mental health problems and moved out of his home, leaving Sheldon behind to fend for himself. For several years, he returned just once a week, for a maximum of 10 mins each visit, to throw in food for him and the last 6 months Cody a collie pup also the animals, then left again. The dogs were never taken out of the rooms which imprisoned them and would starve for 6 days until food was thrown in again the following week.
Sheldon has had a complete lack of socialisation or stimulation and is unlikely to have left the house in at least two years. Sheldon was kept in a side utility area where he could only see out the door by jumping up so jumping is what he does now whenever he is stressed, hence he is climbing up at the wall in the kennel. Sheldon is petrified at the moment and flips and panics on lead. However, Sheldon shows no malice and the dog warden believes he will recover with gentle, confidence building. He seems scared of other dogs. He needs very slow, gentle handling at the moment. Will not be housetrained as have been living knee deep in several years worth of dog excrement and filth.

Sheldon was picked up and carried to the van when removed from the property. He was tense when picked up but seemed calm when carried and on removal at the kennels, but was still hysterical on lead with occasional freezing. He seemed fearful of other dogs although they were not close by. Unfortunately Sheldon has coped poorly with kennel life, initially turning to the wall and jumping when people approached. Over a few days this lessened and he seemed to derive comfort from his bed, going to it when the kennel was approached but standing or sitting on his hind legs and pushing in to the back wall of the kennel while barking and growling. He also hid behind the bed at times when approached and showed signs of physical aggression if anyone tried to touch the bed. Staff members spent time sitting outside or just inside the kennel while throwing him treats but he did not seem to improve.
It was impossible to get Sheldon out of his kennel without severely stressing him. When he was put on lead he immediately screamed and became hysterical and when he was ushered into a compound for exercise he pinned himself in a corner on his hind legs and also made attempts to try and jump. The decision was made to leave him in the kennel, stop going in apart from to clean the kennel and to drop treats into the kennel when passing as he likes food. Sheldon refused to eat the treats until he was left alone. On Thursday I visited Sheldon and although he growled and barked as usual, he seemed very slightly more calm and sat in his bed rather than pinning himself to the wall. I felt that the outlook of the kennel was too much for him and asked if he could be moved to a kennel if possible with a more calm outlook.
17.12.16: Dog Warden Report Sheldon
Sheldon is the success story! He is coming on in leaps and bounds with other people. He now follows staff around and is fine being handled by them. Even better than that, though he is still fearful, he is coming to the front of the kennel when people approach, although he will back off a bit as they reach the kennel. Today he took a number of treats from my hand and was sitting on his hind legs being totally endearing as I approached the kennel!
Sheldon came into us today. SarahK has taken him home for care, a bath and then is going to be neutered and vaccinated tomorrow
