Barley Parson's JRT DOB 2007 Rowfant W Sussex

Homing Requirements: Barley is inept with dogs and is learning to trust people. He needs a family who knows how to support a terrier, manage him with loving care, and promote his sense of self worth. TerrierRescue promotes a non-confrontational approach based on loving kindness and lots of forgiveness. We believe in a respectful approach: our terriers are their own people. Barley needs to learn to be at the heart of a family and to be involved in activities relating to his needs and fulfilment. A secure garden and exit management are required as with any terrier. Barley needs to be an only pet and is not for live-in or stay-over children.

His Story: Barley was taken in by a son who then left home; Barley ended up staying with the son's self-confessed "non doggie" mother. He was kept in the kitchen, conservatory, and garden. TerrierRescue was approached to help find a terrier family to provide for his needs. Our vet has operated on Barley to correct a problem 'down below' to alleviate repeated infections; Barley needs to be kept hydrated. Barley is neutered, chipped and vax'd and is now in kennels in Godstone, Surrey.
Advert: Barley is a lovely terrier. He loves his walks and is learning to be walked with other dogs whilst at the kennels. Barley travels well in the car; he is housetrained and affectionate. Barley is joyful in encounters but needs respect around his space and is nervous of sudden movements. It may be best for him not to be allowed on the sofa as he has bitten out of nerves when disturbed suddenly. Barley settle and is happy in his own company.
Barley is a beautiful Parson's Jack Russell who is 7 years old. He is ready to come into a confident and patient family's care to bring him through his nerves so he can explore his skills. He is too nervous to be an integrated family member
and will need his space respected until he learns to share. Barley needs a special family to very gradually build trust. He is absolutely adorable.

Sadly Barley has had a arthritic shoulder for nearly 2 years which needed recently continuous pain killers. On Sunday he was very stiff and couldn't walk without a gentle, gentle caring approach. Barley stopped eating but we managed to get him to take roast chicken Saturday afternoon and so he received his pain killers down. Sunday he wasn't interested in even Chicken. Barley was carried home by Sarah & Ralf who had planned to give him home comforts this week. Barley refused all his most tempting food which he couldnt have refused before. Barley lost his bowel control as soon as he was carried out to pass water in the garden. Sarah & Ralf had tried everything and we arranged to meet with our senior vet with a urine sample today ; we knew he was seriously ill. Barley wasnt really responding and refused fluids. Despite this his abdomen seemed full. Our vet picked up on this and Xrayed him to find a large mass on his abdomen Mark our vet's look was clear...Barley's body was breaking down beyond return...Sarah & Ralf comforted him as he gently went to sleep and have laid him to rest in their garden.

Re: Barley Parson's JRT DOB 2007 Godstone Kenns
Well Barley changed his kennel during the week to be in the terrier block where he is meeting Kennel staff and Voluntary walkers directly on entry. He needs a respectful approach where there is the air of negotiation. We went into the walkers room today and I changed his harness. It took a little time as he is slightly wary of direct contactfrom strangers but gushing in his offer of affection at the same time. We managed it well, once I could gain his co-operation on the task at hand and not to be exploring everywhere and everything.
We had a lovely walk on the extender lead. He met several dogs on lead as a 5 yard distance and did very well just a squeak on leaving and a circling back The dogs in question didn't really need to meet a terrier so all was cordial and good.
Barley is just finishing his 7 day course of Panacur to ensure he hasn't lungworm as a matter of course for our incoming dogs. Today he was flea treated and will have a bath after the weekend. Happy Chappie!

Re: Barley Parson's JRT DOB 2007 Godstone Kenns
Met this little man for the first time yesterday - what a joy. Took a little while to get his harness on because he was so excited.
Then decided I would walk him today on the charity walk (Tim was walking Snowy). He was a little vocal on the journey to Ashdown Forest. At first I wondered if we would make it all the way round because Barley kept lying down. I wasn't to concerned because he would fit in Tim's rucksack. But the more we walked the more alive he became towards the end sniffing every blade ! He was a little star and I will definitely be going back to walk him.
Had a wonderful walk and him and Snowy were perfect gentlemen!

Collected Barley for the walk - he was very excited to see me and once we got the harness on it was a brisk walk to the car - he sat in the front with Rachel - On the walk we were accompanied by Dexter and Pepsi - he was aboslutely smashing, didn't react at all to the other dogs and joined me in the queue for a well deserved bacon roll & cup of tea where there were pleny of other dogs around - no reaction at all.
No sleeps on the way back as he was far too interested on what's going on around him or did Dexter's snoring keep him awake :)

Barley boy has come home with me for a couple of nights fun and rest

What a little gem Barley is :)
Such a good boy overnight, offered him choice of his bed next to mine or on my bed, yes, he chose my bed !!! Slept through, curled up and snuggled next to me :love4:
Happy to wake up when I did, completely housetrained, no question of that. Out into the garden for his business and then happy to wait on my bed (it's a hard life !!)!whilst I had a shower. He just loves, walk, rest and play !
Very affectionate boy, got a few precious kisses this morning
Top little terrier, more pics later
